Overview

Pediatric Speech and Language Pathologist who evaluates and treats patients, birth through 21 years of age, in an outpatient nonprofit pediatric clinical setting for a variety of speech and language disorders.

 

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Evaluating, diagnosing, and re-evaluating speech and language disorders: articulation, expressive/receptive language, pragmatics, etc.
  • Creating treatment plans to address the individual needs of pediatric population to include short and long term goals and caregiver coaching.
  • Provide direct one-on-one clinical treatment to improve speech, language, and communication of pediatric clients.
  • Provide interventions specific to pediatric clients with a variety of communication-based needs as they relate to various etiologies (e.g. ASD, speech delay, speech sound disorder, etc.)
  • Provide caregiver education/training as well as communicate with families about plan of care and goal progress.
  • Document patient progress according to approved medical documentation standards in a timely manner via Epic software.
  • Collaborate and maintain cooperative working relationships with all members of the care team, to include OT and PT, in order to provide patient‐centered care.
  • Maintaining professional and technical knowledge through attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications, etc.
  • Recommend, acquire, and modify necessary adaptive equipment to augment patient’s independence.
  • Recommending an appropriate discharge plan for patients following completion of their Plan of Treatment.
  • Supervising therapy assistants as appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of common speech and language disorders related to the following areas: articulation, fluency, language, and pragmatics.
  • Clinical reasoning skills for selecting the diagnostic tools, analyzing results to identify an accurate diagnosis while developing an effective treatment plan, adjusting treatment plans as required, and identifying alternative ways to help.
  • Knowledge of evidenced based treatment practices.
  • Interpersonal savvy and influence skills in managing difficult client situations, ie. addressing behavioral needs common to kids on the Autism Spectrum
  • Strong communication skills for collaborating with therapy team, caregivers and clients.
  • Skills in resource seeking and advocating for patients through community resources, referral sources, agencies and colleagues (OT and PT).
  • Knowledge and skill of equipment and instruments used in daily activities, responsible use of such equipment and best practices for equipment use
  • Skill in time management such as assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands.
  • Attention to detail for maintaining notes on treatment and progress.
  • Compassion when working with individuals frustrated by the difficulties they are experiencing.
  • Listening skills for listening to concerns and symptoms of clients so they can decide the most appropriate course of treatment.
  • Ensure all actions, job performance, personal conduct and communications to always represent CommUnityCare in a highly professional manner.
  • Experience/knowledge of Joint Commission accreditation process and requirements, as well as all federal, state and local regulations and standards associated with the delivery of care in a Federally Qualified Health Center.
  • Demonstrated understanding and/or experience working in a patient-centered medical home (PCMH) environment.
  • Ensure all tasks provided and associated with patient care, patient administrative processes and related duties comply with all regulatory and accreditation standards including The Joint
  • Commission, and CommUnityCare Standard Operating Procedures and CommUnityCare Policies and Procedures.

Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION:
Master's degree in speech language pathology from an accredited program

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE:
Active and unrestricted license to practice as a Speech Language Pathologist in the State of Texas.


REQUIRED COURSES/COMPLETIONS (e.g., CPR):

-Current Health Care Provider Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification through American Heart Association or American Red Cross. Will be required to maintain a current CPR certification during employment.

-Current Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) for Healthcare Providers through American Heart Association.
