Overview

In collaboration with patients, families (as defined by the patient) and staff across all disciplines and departments is responsible for performing a variety of X-ray procedures for diagnostic purposes.

Responsibilities

Essential/Primary Duties:

 

• Perform assigned X-ray procedures and performs a variety of mammography-related for the service.
• Develop X-ray films using processing equipment.
• File X-rays according to established practice, policy and procedure and maintain accurate filing system.
• Schedule patients for X-rays in support of clinic activities and/or referrals.
• Compile data and prepare reports for management review.
• Maintain equipment using quality checks, arrange preventive maintenance as indicated and assure that X- ray services are in compliance with state licensing, inspection and safety requirements.
• Order/issue supplies, as needed, and ensure adequate inventory is maintained.
• Immediately report anything irregular such as equipment issues and patient or staff member exposure to the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) and leadership.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• Individual must maintain a high degree of accuracy in positioning and exposure technique.
• Communicates with the patient and relays any pertinent information to the Clinical Manager and documents on tracking sheet/chart.
• Understands and performs any necessary additional exams.
• Complete all direct and indirect care documentation in timely manner and ensure patient records are current and complete.
• Attend daily patient care (unit) huddles and periodic informational (clinic) huddles, meetings, patient conferences, or planning sessions. These may be related to quality assurance, patient care and other related topics within the clinic.
• Attend seminars and maintain all licensure and/or certification requirements for continuing education and best practices.
• Participate in quality strategies to evaluate compliance with evidence-based guidelines, standards and to identify opportunities to improve patient outcomes.
• Ensure all tasks provided and associated with patient care, patient administrative processes and related duties comply with all regulatory and accreditation standards including The Joint Commission and CommUnityCare Standard Operating Procedures and CommUnityCare Policies and Procedures.
• Develop and maintain favorable internal relationships, partnerships with co-workers, including clinical managers, clinical support staff, providers and business office staff.
• Interact respectfully and collaboratively with patients and their families, striving to develop favorable relationships with families.
• Collaborate with all members of the care team in providing patient-centered care.
• Consistently practice excellent mammography positioning and exposure technique.


ADDENDUM:


In addition to the Radiologic Technologist position responsibilities and duties, team members acting in the capacity of a Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) will be responsible for the following additional duties. The RSO role is an assignment and not a permanent, regular position.
• Establishing and overseeing operating and safety procedures that maintain radiation exposures as low as reasonablyachievable (ALARA), and to review them regularly to ensure that the procedures are current and conform with Texas Administrative Code 289.226.

• Ensuring individual monitoring devices are properly used by occupationally-exposed personnel, records are kept of the monitoring results, and timely notifications are made as required by Texas Administrative Code 289.226.

• Investigating and reporting to the agency each known or suspected case of radiation exposure to an individual or radiation level detected in excess of limits established by this chapter and each theft or loss of source(s) of radiation, determining the cause, and taking steps to prevent its recurrence.
• Having a thorough knowledge of management policies and administrative procedures of the registrant and keeping management informed on a periodic basis of the performance of the registrant's radiation protection program, if applicable.
• Assuming control and having the authority to institute corrective actions including shut-down of operations when necessary in emergency situations or unsafe conditions.
• Maintaining records as required by Texas Administrative Code 289.226.

• Ensuring that personnel are adequately trained and complying with this chapter, the conditions of the certificate of registration, and the operating and safety procedures of the registrant.


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:


• Ability to effectively communicate to patients the procedures and educate women about the role of regular mammography in preventative breast health.
• Ability to effectively communicate on an individual and small group basis to doctors, patients and other employees.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed and sometimes complicated, written or oral instructions.
• Maintain patient-first focus at all times and exhibit outstanding customer service skills.

Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION:

 

Graduation from an accredited American Medical Association School of Radiology.

 

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE:


• A minimum of 1 year experience in a clinical setting.
• Demonstrated experience properly taking x-rays and ensuring patient safety during the procedure.
• Demonstrated experience at processing films.

 

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE:

 

Holds and maintains these certifications as a professional. Lapsing/expiration of these certifications/licensure will result in suspension of work:


• Current registration with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) or other recognized association. Hold current certification with ARRT in Mammography or MQSA qualified to take ARRT advanced level exam in mammography with documentation of clinical experience.
• Must possess non-restricted licensure in the State of Texas.
• Current Medical Radiologic Technologist Certificate from the Texas Department of Health.
